Brrrrrr-brace yourself and take the plunge

File photo - Team Salty Dog walks arm in arm into frigid waters of Lake Manawa not only once but twice during last year's Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Iowa.

Buck-up and take the plunge on behalf of Special Olympics Iowa during the annual Polar Plunge in Council Bluffs.  This is the coolest (and coldest thing) you’ll do all year.

The 11th Polar Plunge takes place on March 25th at Lake Manawa State Park.  Each year this is a unique opportunity to make a big difference for Special Olympics.  Register as an individual or get a team together.

  • Early registration and check-in will occur on Friday, March 24, at Barley’s, 114 W Broadway.
  • Or register online at
  • Or register the day of the plunge at Barley’s 9-11 am.
  • Participants will gather at the Council Bluffs Country Club, 4500 Piute St, 10:45-11:45 am.
  • The plunge begins at noon.

The Polar Plunge is the signature fundraiser for Special Olympics Iowa with Council Bluffs being one of 13 locations around the state.  Participants must raise $75 to participate by collecting donations from friends, family, and co-workers.

Costumes are encouraged, and fun is required.  After the plunge, dry off, get warm, and enjoy lunch, music, and prizes.  Awards will be given for costume categories and a variety of successful fundraising.  Last year, more than 200 hearty souls had a great time.

Special Olympics transforms lives through encouragement, acceptance, and joy.  By training and playing together, Special Olympians are empowered and form life changing friendships. For more information on Special Olympics Iowa, visit
