Tap a silver maple for a sweet lesson
Tapping maple trees is a sure sign spring is on its way. Mark the occasion at the 24th annual Maple Tree Tap on Saturday, March 4th at Botna Bend Park.
The Botna Bend silver maple trees are typically the species first to “awaken” when trees change from winter dormancy and tree sap is ready for harvest. Park Ranger Jon Fenner demonstrates the five-step process during a 45-minute program.
The demonstrations will take place at 9 am, 10 am (time slot geared for children), and 11 am. Attendees are asked to register by March 1, if possible, for one of the three time slots by either calling 712-545-3283 or doing so at www.pottcoconservation.com.
While a participation fee is not charged, like all county parks, there is a $2 per vehicle fee required upon entering the park. Botna Bend Park is located at 42926 Mahogany Rd near Hancock.
